Fear of Communism spreading to USA led to false accusations and investigations Senator Joseph McCarthy, in order to get re-elected, accused many people of being communist he had little or no evidence to support his claims He was “ busted ” when he tried to accuse the Army of having communists Hearing was televised and people saw what a bully McCarthy really was McCarthyism is a term meaning false accusations based on little evidence or guilt by association

Fear of Communism increased because… Alger Hiss, a high ranking official in the State Department, was convicted of perjury which means he was lying about providing secret government documents to Communist spies Sentenced to life in jail Julius & Ethel Rosenberg, known communists, were convicted of treason: giving the Soviets information on how to build a nuclear weapon from the Manhatten Project They were both executed

E. Increased Military spending Benefited Northern Virginians…Pentagon and gov’t contractors created jobs Benefits Hampton Roads which had large naval and air bases
