COOL CURRENT BRANCH FEATURES

How to Upgrade from 1511 A quick review on the very easy process of keeping your site current #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Keeping Your Current Branch Environment Current Use the Updates and Servicing Feature – Online mode automatically discovers, downloads, and prepares new builds for installation – Offline mode for disconnected environments requires admin intervention #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Keeping Your Current Branch Environment Current (2) After a build is introduced, you simply install it if you want – Can skip builds not needed Installed build supported for one year – Run the install wizard, and you are done – Can test new client builds with “Pre-production Client” testing #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Keeping Your Current Branch Environment Current (3) Updates and Servicing is used for both production and Technical Preview environments – Same process used for both – Major differences are: Available updates to each environment Technical preview does not support offline mode #ITDevConnections

HOW TO UPDATE CURRENT BRANCH

What’s Different Between Production and Tech Preview? When to use both of them (and you do want to use both) #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Tech Preview vs. Production All that we’ve talked about so far has been production deployments – 1511, 1602 and 1606 are production releases There are also technical preview releases – Never applicable to a production version environment – So will want a separate environment running a technical preview build #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Tech Preview vs. Production (2) The releases are specific to a type of environment – Production deployments only ever get production builds – Tech Preview deployments only ever get TP builds Can’t install one on another – Can’t move between them either Tech Preview offers early access to future production features – Should expect that TP features become production at some point #ITDevConnections

SESSION TITLE Technical Preview Limitations Very specific limitations to technical preview environements: – As of TP5, 90 day expiration (previously was 60) – Only 10 clients per site – Standalone primary site – Limited client operating systems – Limited SQL Server versions – Only online mode supported #ITDevConnections
