Early Life Born October 2, 1800 Southampton County, Virginia
Born on the Virginia Plantation of Benjamin Turner Mother was named Nancy but knew nothing of his father Sold 3 times in his child hood and was finally hired to John Travis in the 1820’s

So who was Nat turner? A slave that was allowed to practice reading, writing and religion Became a preacher and leader of African Slaves on Benjamin Turners plantation (Claimed he was chosen by God to lead them in rebellion)

Beginning of Rebellion
Believed that the Sun eclipse was a sign that a insurrection was time Enrolled 4 more slaves to join him A revolt was planned, discontinued and then rescheduled for August 21, 1831

Rebel Turner and 6 others killed the Travis Family and were successfully able to obtain fire arms and horses Enlisted 75 other slaves to part take in unorganized revolt Murdered 51 white people

After Rebellion Turner hid nearby for 6 weeks until his discovery
Jerusalem, Virginia was his scheduled location for his hanging along with 16 of his followers. November 11, 1831

Results of rebellion Turners actions put fear in the Southerners
Ended emancipation movement in that region Harsher slave laws Increased the separation between slave holders and free-soilers (anti-slavery political party)
