Alcohol & Its Effects

Today we will explore the effects of alcohol use on the body, the mind and society.

You will be in 6 groups. Each group will have a sheet of paper and will be preparing a presentation for class today. I will give you a sheet of facts that you need to present. Follow the directions on your group’s sheet to make the presentation. You will have some time to prepare, summarize and practice your presentation, but please use your time wisely.

Turn to “Key Points About Alcohol” on page 5. Each group will now present their key points. Copy these points on your activity sheet.

Presentation 1 A 12-ounce beer, a 10-ounce wine cooler, a 4- ounce glass of wine and a 1-1/4-ounce shot of 80-proof liquor all have the same amount of alcohol.

Presentation 2 Even in small amounts, alcohol can affect a person’s judgment, speech, reasoning and behavior.

Presentation 3 More than 40% or all fatal car crashes are alcohol related.

Presentation 4 It’s illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol.

Presentation 5 In the long term, the effects of alcohol can include liver failure, stroke, some forms of cancer and damage to the pancreas. Pregnant women should never drink alcohol.

Presentation 6 Most states have zero tolerance laws that state that people under 21 cannot have any alcohol in the bloodstream at any time.

Below your notes, write 2 reasons teens shouldn’t use alcohol.
