7 Before Lab 1.Read the ENTIRE lab before you begin and listen for any additional directions. 2.Do only assigned experiments. 3.NEVER work alone in a lab 4.Know the location and how to use the following Fire extinguisher Fire blanket Eyewash LAB SAFETY

8 Before Lab 1.Wear appropriate clothing Pants Closed toe shoes Long sleeves rolled up 2.Hair and Jewelry Long hair tied back Dangling jewelry removed or taped 3.Glasses instead of contacts LAB SAFETY

9 While in lab 1.Personal Protective Equipment Goggles, aprons, gloves, etc. 2.Keep things out of your mouth Direct contamination (tasting a chemical in lab) Indirect contamination (surfaces aren’t clean) including eating, drinking, and make- up 3.Lab area clean and uncluttered 4.Don’t leave equipment unattended LAB SAFETY

10 After Lab 1.Dispose of chemicals and other waste as instructed. 2.Wash and return equipment. 3.Wipe down lab space with damp paper towel 4.WASH YOUR HANDS! LAB SAFETY

12 What to do if… LAB SAFETY ProblemSolution Glass breaksNotify teacher to get the sharps container. Use broom and dustpan, and NOT bare hands BurnRun area under cool water. Have another student tell the teacher. Person on fireGet person on the floor, put out flames with fire blanket. Notify. Cut or bleedTreat blood as potentially dangerous! Try to put band-aids on or stop nosebleeds by yourself. Tell teacher as soon as possible!

13 What to do if… LAB SAFETY ProblemSolution Spill chemical on clothing Remove clothing affected and rinse with water. Notify. Chemical in eyesGet to eyewash station. Hold eyelids open and rinse for 15 minutes. Notify. Extra chemicals left after experiment It varies based on what it is, listen for instructions.

16 LAB SAFETY MINI-POSTER You want to do more labs, but some of your classmates are being too careless. Design a poster to inform them about the dangers and ways to prevent them from getting hurt. Your poster must include: A title A situation where students could be injured A suggestion how to prevent this from happening again Dangers in Lab 1.Eating / Drinking in the lab 2. Fire 3.Spilled liquids 4.Broken equipment This assignment is due TUESDAY!!
