THE YOUTH IN ENERGY INDABA “your future in the energy mix” 20 -21 October 2016 Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape Province The Vulindlela Conference Centre www.yei2016.co.za

THE ROLE OF INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCTION IN ENERGY MIX PRESENTATION BY SISA NJIKELANA – CHAIRPERSON OF SOUTH AFRICAN INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCTION ASSOCIATION; NIASA; PROGRESSIVE BUSINESS FORUM – CONVENOR OF ENERGY DESK 20 TH OCTOBER 2016 VULINDLELA CONFERENCE CENTRE COEGA IDZ

BRIEFLY ABOUT ENERGY ENABLER OF ECONOMIC ACTIVITIES ENABLER OF SOCIAL WELL-BEING USUALLY REGARDED AS PART OF INFRASTRUCTURE FOCUS ON ELECTRICITY FOR NOW NOTE: LIQUID FUELS ALSO PART OF ENERGY INDUSTRY FOCUS ON INDEPENDENT POWER PRODUCTION INDUSTRY

BRIEFLY ABOUT ENERGY South African economy relies heavily on energy; RSA is dependent on imported crude oil and is increasingly importing products from crude oil especially petrol and diesel; The petroleum sector employs about 90 000 people with an annual turnover of about R270 billion; 46000 employees The electricity industry (ESKOM) employs approximately 46000 employees with the annual turnover of R77.8 billion; and To date 12, 012 jobs have been created by the renewable Energy Independent Power Production and direct investment from IPPs is R120 billion

EMERGENCE OF IPP INDUSTRY IN SOUTH AFRICA 1998 ENERGY POLICY ENERGY LAWS: NATIONAL ENERGY ACT – 2008; CEF ACT, GAS ACT; NUCLEAR ENERGY ACT PREPARATIONS FOR PRIVATE SECTOR PARTICIPATION FROM 2010: RENEWABLE ENERGY INDEPENDENT POWER PROCUREMENT PROGRAMME SMALL HYDRO PROGRAMME BIOMASS WASTE TO ENERGY PROGRAMME COAL POWER GENERATION GAS POWER GENERATION NUCLEAR ENERGY PROGRAMME
