4 Getting to know you zPick a partner whom you do not know zTalk for 5-10 minutes zPrepare a 1-2 minute professional introduction of your partner

5 What is “good writing”? z In a group of three or four, come up with a prioritized list of the five most important characteristics of “good writing” z Answer the question, “Are these characteristics of all good writing?” z Which ones do you think apply most strongly to business writing? Why? z Be prepared to report to the class

6 Effective business writing... zIs focused on an objective zIs focused on the reader’s needs zCan’t be separated from the situation zCan look very different at different times

7 Futura Case discussion z In a small group (3-5 people), read the Futura Case z Begin by discussing what action(s) you would take in this situation z Tuesday we will complete the questions

8 Assignment zRead Chapter 1 and Appendix B in EBC zWrite a draft of the memo part of the Baseline Evaluation Portfolio zDrafts should be typed, double-spaced, and ready for peer review (accurate spelling, no typos, coherent thought)

9 Baseline Evaluation Portfolio zDue January 11 zPart 1: biographical statement yA brief, professional self-introduction yExamples: look at annual reports, loan proposals, SEC filings, book jackets zPart 2: sample of real-world business writing yExamples: choose a cover letter, thank you, acceptance letter, memo or report from internship, etc. zPart 3: descriptive memo (draft due January 9) yAn analysis of your writing in context yThink about writing you’ll do in your career
