2 The Nature and Meaning of Guidance
Guidance is necessary because of human needs and desires. Around us around are conditions and situations which reflect wasted human energy, misspent lives, misery, poverty, disaster, unnecessary loss of lives, and all because of lack of direction and wrong choices of vocation, recreation, companions, educational opportunities and sense of values.

Guidance, as organized and administered in a more or less systematic manner, maybe based on the fundamental aims of education as provided in our constitution, that it is the duty of all schools and other educational agencies in the Philippines to guide the children.

Guidance (Bennet), is a process of helping the individual to determine his physical, social, intellectual and personality assets and liabilities as well as to know the conditions and opportunities of the situation that confront him so he can make wise and intelligent choices and adjustment.

Guidance (Crow and Crow), is an assistance made available by personally qualified, trained men or women to an individual of any age to help him manage his own life activities, and make his own decisions and carry his own burdens.

The Meaning and Nature of Guidance The aims of Guidance are to: Help individuals, by their own effort as far as possible, to achieve up to the level of their own capacities to gain personal satisfaction in as many aspect of their lives as possible, and to make their maximum contribution to society; Assist them to meet and solve their own problems as they arise, to make correct interpretation facts, and arrive at wise choices and decisions;

8 Guidance Services A group of services to individual to assist them in securing knowledge and skills needed in making plans and devices, and interpreting life; This includes facilities, procedures and tools. It provides comprehensive information about opportunities, personality development, effective studying and learning; adjustments in classroom, co-curricular and community activities (Crow and Crow)

9 Scope of Guidance Services
Services rendered to individual and his needs (Inventory of pupils, information opportunities, counselling, follow-up studies, placement and assisting of teachers in case studies)

10 Services to staff members in providing for leadership
Guidance Services Services to staff members in providing for leadership (Organizing and conducting in-service training, assisting teachers with utilization of information and securing cooperation among staff members.) Services pertaining to evaluation of service (Survey, cooperation with parents and community, improvement of guidance program through research)

11 Two forms of Guidance Service Group Guidance
Guidance Services Two forms of Guidance Service Group Guidance - is any group activity in which the primary purpose is to assist each individual in the group to solve his problems and make adjustments. - Cover all types of problems having elements in common.

Guidance Services Group interaction with face to face relationship in the homeroom, in regular subject classes, assemblies, conference and meetings. - example: Orientations

13 Guidance services directed to an individual
2. Individual Guidance Guidance services directed to an individual This can mean a few minutes help given to an individual informally in a classroom or in the guidance office. Meeting situations that is peculiar to himself, to his own needs and interest. Example: ambition, choice of school and vocation, failing grades, personality adjustment, physical or mental handicap and family problems.

Individual Inventory Analysis Service This is a service which provides a synthesis of information about the individual which can be used to gain an understanding of himself as he is potentially capable of becoming. This also help parents, teachers, counselors and administrators understand the learners for healthy growth and development.

Guidance Services 2. Information Service This service provides information available to the learners which can be classified: Occupational Information -Data about positions and occupation, duties and requirements, conditions of work, rewards and advancement patterns, supply and demand of workers.

Educational Information -future education and training opportunities and requirements, curricular and non-curricular offers, requirements for entrance, conditions and problems of students life C. Personal-social information -info about “understanding self”, “Getting along with others,” and others – boy-girl relationship, good manners, etiquette, leisure time, family relationship, budgeting and healthy living.

Placement Service -Educational placement is done by helping pupils make adjustment to the next grade level in the elementary school or to the next year level in the secondary school. -Preparation of learners’ records to be used by the next teacher -Also extends to participation with co-curricular and community activities

Guidance Services -For Grade 10 level, the choice of school for the Senior High education. -For College level, the choice of school for tertiary education. Information about degree programs, scholarships and entrance examinations. -Job Placements Senior High or College Graduates

24 4. Career Development Education and Decision Making
Guidance Services 4. Career Development Education and Decision Making -Essential information about work in home, school and community, nation and world. -Develop self-awareness, dependability cooperation, appreciation of work and efficient work habits. Orientation to the many job opportunities available and exploration of occupations consistent with the individual’s interest and abilities.

Follow-up Service Objectives: -Determine the holding power of the school -Discover the grade or year level at which most drop outs occurs -Find out why pupils/students leave school before graduation -Seek information which will help provide clues in identifying potential drop-outs -determine the mobility of former pupils

26 -Evaluate effectiveness of placement program
Guidance Services -Determine the percentage of pupils who enter high school; students who enter Senior High /College -Evaluate effectiveness of placement program -Obtain opinions of former students concerning efficiency of guidance program -Obtain opinions concerning needed modifications of the curriculum -Identify former students who need further counseling

Guidance Services Counseling Service Major goal is to help individual become the person he is capable of becoming It is optimizing the development of the individual A dynamic personal interaction between counselor and counselee, where the counsellor employs methods, approaches or techniques to enhance the counselee’s interpersonal and intrapersonal development and competencies.

28 Additional Guidance Services
The following have been added as part and parcel of every services of Guidance Program: 1. Evaluation – the determination whether the services offered have attained its objectives and meeting the needs of the clientele.

29 Guidance Services 2. Public Relations – the explanation of guidance roles and functions, program and services, and benefits to insiders and outsiders. 3. Consultation – the mutual sharing and analysis of information with the administration, faculty and parents to facilitate the decision – making and learning new strategies in helping counselee.

30 Guidance Services 4. Program Development – assessment of needs, planning and provision of systematic program for delivery of services -also refers to all activities involved in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the entire Guidance Program or any of its services and activities.
