Source D : “This was the time when Timbuktu and Jenne began their long career…of learning and from now onwards the reputation of their schools…spread far into Muslim Asia” Basil Davidson, writing about Timbuktu and Jenne, the main cities of Mali, as they were in the 14 th century (1972) Source E : “In the broad field and long duration of negro life, not a single civilisation (well-governed, educated society)…has existed..” Josiah Nott, an American supported of slavery (1854) Questions: 1.Read sources C,D and E. Does source E agree with source D and C? Explain why? 2.How reliable are sources C,D and E? 3.Why do you think these African civilisations are unknown to most people in Britain?
