‘Expert Jigsaw’ Each member of your group is going to look at a different key question about ‘Alkali Metals’. You will work in your expert group for 7 minutes and then return to your original group, ready to teach them what you have learnt. Create an individual bubble map (on A3 paper) to show your learning from this activity. This must be good quality as it is going in your folder.

Expert 1: Describe the appearance and guidelines for handling alkali metals. Expert 2: What are the melting and boiling points of alkali metals like? Expert 3: Describe facts about the density and hardness of the alkali metals. Expert 4: What trends in chemical properties are there for the alkali metals.

Expert 1: Describe the appearance and guidelines for handling alkali metals. (key questions) 1.What can you cut the metal with? 2.Why are the metals stored under oil? 3.Describe how reactivity changes down the group. 4.How can you stay safe when handling the metals?

Expert 2:What are the melting and boiling points like? (key questions) 1.Are the melting points, higher or lower than other metals in general? 2.How does the melting point change as you go down the group? 3.Do the boiling points show a similar change? 4.What does this tell you about the forces holding the atoms together?

Expert 3: Describe facts about the density and hardness of the alkali metals. (key questions) 1.Define the term density, 2.State the units of density, 3.Are the densities, higher or lower than other metals in general? 4.How does the density change as you go down the group? 5.Does the hardness show a similar trend?

Expert 4: What trends in chemical properties are there for the alkali metals. (key questions) 1.Describe the reactions of alkali metals with chlorine gas and with water 2.For each reaction - Describe the product/s that form 3.Write an example word equation for the reaction. 4.How does the reactivity change as you go down the group?

Rules for teaching others/sharing information DO NOT INTERRUPT. It is rude. If you wish to ask a question whilst another member of your group is teaching you, raise your hand. Make sure everyone in your group has time to ask questions and write information they need in their book Expert 1 will go first, followed by 2, 3 and 4
