6 What Is Financial Aid? o Money used to help you pay for college o Comes in the forms of grants, scholarships, work programs and student loans o All students are eligible for some type of financial assistance for college o Seniors should apply for this money on the FAFSA after October 1, 2016

7 Getting Financial Aid FAFSA o Complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to request financial aid FAFSA.gov o Find the FAFSA at FAFSA.gov FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID and password o Sign your FAFSA online with an FSA (Federal Student Aid) ID and password FREE o Never pay to complete this form: it’s a FREE application

8 Types of Financial Aid Free Money o Grants o Scholarships Earned Money o Work-Study Student Loans o Subsidized o Unsubsidized o Parent Loans

9 Federal Grants not o Money that does not have to be paid back o Usually awarded on the basis of financial need o Apply for all federal grants through the FAFSA application o Types of grants: Pell Grant Iraq and Afghanistan Service Grant Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (FSEOG)

10 Scholarships not o Money that does not have to be paid back o Awarded on merit, financial need, skills, hobbies, family history and athletics o Apply for as many scholarships as possible Scholarship o Check the Scholarship section at and also on our Facebook page where we post weekly scholarships o Search scholarship websites, books, local organizations, churches, family employers, college financial aid offices o Contact your tribal office for assistance if you’re of Native American heritage

13 College Work-Study o Provides part-time jobs for students with financial need o Jobs available on- or off-campus where you’ll perform duties related to a course of study or through involvement within the community o Types of jobs, pay rates and work schedules can vary greatly

14 Federal Student Loans o Money students and parents borrow to help pay educational expenses must be repaid o Loans must be repaid and repayment usually begins after education is complete or you withdraw from college o Only borrow what is really needed o Look at loans as an investment in your future

15 Loan Types Federal Direct Loan o Subsidized o Subsidized – Government pays the interest while you’re in school o Unsubsidized o Unsubsidized – Student is responsible for the interest on this loan PLUS Loan o Parent Loan for Undergraduate Students

16 Oklahoma Financial Aid Oklahoma Tuition Aid Grant o Grant program for eligible Oklahoma residents o Apply with the FAFSA Oklahoma’s Promise o Scholarship program for eligible Oklahoma students okpromise.org o Apply in the 8 th, 9 th or 10 th grade at okpromise.org Academic Scholars Program o Awarded to students who score in the 99.5 percentile on the ACT/SAT exams
