7.  Get a diploma from an accredited nursing program. These vocational nursing programs vary in length, depending on which institution you choose. After graduation you would be eligible to take the NCLEX for licensure.  Complete an associate's degree in nursing (ASN). These programs also vary in length and usually take two to three years to complete. After graduation you would be eligible to take the NCLEX for licensure. Many students transition to BSN programs after having completed an ASN.  Obtain a bachelor's degree in nursing (BSN). Most programs take about four years to complete, and cost does vary depending on the institution you choose. A bachelor's program typically include more training in the social sciences, and they may include courses in sociology, communications, leadership, and critical thinking.
