What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a robot? Many are thinking that robots look like the cartoons that we see in television and in some movies and video games.

But, what is a robot?  Robot is a machine that can help humans accomplish difficult tasks.  A robot can act under the direct control of a human or autonomously under the control of a programmed computer.

When we meet robots for the first time in history?  For the first time in history we meet robots in ancient Greece. The biggest was Talos.  From another source we see robots in the lost city of Atlantis.

Which is the science that studies about robots?  The science about robots is called Robotics. There are special labs that help people who deal with robots. These people are called robot scientists.

Where are robots used today?

 Robots are used almost everywhere these days. 1. Education 2. Space travel and research 3. Deep ocean activities 4. Manufacturing 5. Marketing 6. Medicine etc. These are only a few sectors that robots can be used to help humans.

1.Education  Lessons are more interesting when a robot is around. It can play sounds, read colors, move and be your friend! Robots can help you if you find it difficult to do your lessons (learning difficulties).

4.Medicine  Robots help doctors to make us well. Did you know that robots help doctors when making operations? Robots also help pharmacists in delivering the medicines. They help them to avoid mistakes.

2. Space Travel  We would have never been able to know how the planets and the space looks like if we did not have the robotic technology. Humans send robots to the outer space to discover million of new things. Robots in the space help us see and even visit other planets of the universe. In reality spacecrafts are robots that can fly to the moon.

1. Manufacturing  Nowadays robots have been used in factories to make fast a huge number of products (e.g. cars, bikes, planes). Employees spend less time for the same workload.

1. Marketing  Marketing is the use of advertisements for making a product known. Robots can help to make a product known. Robot toys for example are very popular to children (Buzz Lightyear).

3. Robots and the deep oceans  Into the depths of the seas the pressure is so high that even a submarine cant go. So, scientists have made some robots that can dive underwater and travel far deep in places that even the light will not reach. These robots have collected some incredible things from the bottom of the sea!

Conclusion  Robots, as we saw, can be useful in many ways. As technology is improving, there will be new ways to use robots which will bring new hopes and new potentials. And do not forget… Robots have been made to help us and improve our lives. They are our friends and we must learn to live with them from now on!

The Greek “RobGap” Team  Doulgeroglou Chara, Pharmacist  Georgopoulou Eirini, Cosmetics- Α esthetics  Giannakakis Konstantinos, Computer Programmer  Michalakeas Ioannis, Marketing  Mpernardos Georgios, Music Technology

Playtime!  Let’s play with our robots! We will learn together how to behave and protect ourselves while being on the roads. Let’s go kids
