1
Maths Workshop Multiplication and Division Year 5-6
2
The importance of times tables “fluent in the fundamentals” Aiming for –short and long multiplication –short and long division
3
Multiplication Expectations Year 5: multiply numbers up to 4 digits by a one- or two-digit number using a formal written method, including long multiplication for two- digit numbers Year 6: multiply multi-digit numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long multiplication
4
Multiplication Number rods to support Grid method – what multiplication does this represent? Red is 10; green is 3 Pg 44 of the calculations policy
5
Multiplication Pg 46 of the calculations policy – use of place value counters – have a go 164 x 3 = -use PV counters and a grid
6
Short multiplication Multiplying by a single digit Estimating is important
7
Long multiplication Multiplying by a two digit number Important to move from grid multiplication to formal written method with reasoning Video 43 x 24 – model You try – 321 x 18
8
Division expectation Year 5: divide numbers up to 4 digits *by a one-digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders appropriately for the context Year 6: as above * by a two digit number plus… divide numbers up to 4 digits by a two-digit whole number using the formal written method of long division, and interpret remainders as whole number remainders, fractions, or by rounding, as appropriate for the context
9
Short Division dividing by a single digit number Demonstration
10
Long division 325 ÷ 13 – model Now you try 224 ÷ 14
11
Long division with remainders 432 ÷ 15 Express the answer as a remainder
12
Long division with remainders 432 ÷ 15 Express the answer as a fraction
13
Long division with remainders 432 ÷ 15 Express the answer as a decimal
14
Supporting your child at home Play games You can practise calculation if you wish Homework – Praise. Don’t panic! Ask your child to explain everything
15
Supporting your child at home Times Table Challenge (2+ players) –Roll 2 1-10 dice and multiply the two numbers together –The 1 st one to say the correct answer gets a point. –The first to 10 points wins.
16
Supporting your child at home Multiplication Draw (2+ players) –Remove the picture cards, then deal the rest of the cards evenly to all players –Take it in turns to turn over two cards and multiply them together –Whoever has the highest answer wins all the cards from that round. –Repeat until someone has won all the cards

Am I satisfied? Parents in partnership = progress + positivity We very much value your feedback. If you could spare a moment to answer the questionnaire on the ‘parents meeting resources’ page of our website, we would be most grateful. All answers are anonymous and will be used to ensure all future workshops are tailored to your specific needs.
