Missouri Compromise decided whether or not Missouri would be admitted as a slave state. admit Missouri as a slave state in 1820. But, Maine, was to be admitted as a separate, free state. 12 slave states and 12 free states Congress prohibited slavery in the remaining territories in the Louisiana Territory north of the line of 36° 30', except for Missouri.

Marshall Court Strengthens national government at the expense of state’s rights McCullough v. Maryland - established constitutionality of the 2nd BUS and denied states the right to exert independent checks on federal authority. Gibbons v.
