Draw your desk. List the materials that make up your desk. Why choose these materials? Why not paper? Why not gold? How many desks like this are there at SABIS today?
3
Ingredients Supplies Things that are used in the product or process Each material has its own… Properties and characteristics What’s that? Let’s try!
4
Properties Characteristics Desk legs are made of metal because metal materials are strong, can hold a lot of weight, and last a long time. The top is ceramic that is lighter than metal and very strong. All engineers have think about materials. Will it solve the problem or need and is it realistic.
5
Why are cooking pans made of metal? What characteristics and properties of metal makes metal the best material for wires? Why are most cars made of plastic? Answers: Metal can handle heat and can transfer heat energy to food easily. Easy to clean and lasts a long time. (Durable) Metal conducts electricity and can bend easily. Plastic is light and can be very strong.
6
Wood- plants and trees Metals-iron steel copper Plastics-bottles and cars Water-medicine, food Textiles-dishes, bathrooms, fabrics Glass-electronics, houses Each material has its advantages and disadvantages What materials make a telephone pole? Why? Advantage is…. Disadvantage is…
7
For example: Engineers must consider cost and strength in many designs. This is true for you and your projects What to choose?
8
Engineers use Science and technology to solve…. The problem The need The want
9
What are the Axis? What is stronger: Wood or glass? Ceramics or rubber What cost more? Rubber or foam? Porous ceramics or Wood?
10
Conductors pass electricity and heat Insulators do not Why are coolers made of foam? What is the difference between cast iron and stainless steel?
11
Stiff or flexible? Heavy or light? Polymers are plastic Need a light and stiff material? Your material needs to be dense and flexible?
12
$100 will buy each of the products in the chart. “in feet” shows how much area the products will cover. Answer these questions: What are the axis's? Advantages? Disadvantages?
14
ipod changes The refrigerator of the future!
15
Tools are designed with the right materials to solve problems or needs. Simple machines!!
16
Remember the graphs? Each material has its own properties and characteristics. Describe the materials used in these tools. What properties do they have to solve the problem or need?
18
1) What tool is used to put in or take out a nail? 2) What is the difference between a phillips screwdriver and a flat head screwdriver? 3) Why are there so many types of knives? Can you name 5? 4) What are plyers? 5) Can you name at least three simple machines? Get ready for prefects!
19
List all the materials used in your brochure product design and why you would choose them. Be specific on properties and characteristics. MCAS 4!
