Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants EVENT 01 2015
2
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants IFC – Making it Work For Your Business What is IFC? Industry Foundation Classes What is it meant to do? Make working together easier What does it actually do? Erm… How do we make it better? We’ll show you
3
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants What are we doing in this session? Talk for 10 minutes about using IFC in the real-world, focusing on Revit import, link and export workflows problems and solutions 5 minutes of freebies to give you a big head-start 15 minutes practical hands-on training Question and solution time
4
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants What are some common uses of IFC? May be used for data sharing with FM and database Currently often related to fabrication models Exchange of Steel Detailer models
5
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants How do we make it work? Workflow needs to be predictable We are trying to get work done here! Preserve geometry Preserve data Speed to convert File sizes Reporting and tracking
6
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants What colour glasses are you wearing? A.Preserve parametrics and editability? Consider addins to Revit for your flavour B.Preserve data? Look for required parameters and target those C.Just make it look right in 3D! Target item count, scale, visuals
7
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Case Study – nRAH Steelwork Model Conversions Task: import all Steel Detailer models for deliverable to Builder Quick overview: BEP compliance… not kidding Challenges using Revit 2013 Improvements with 2015 Necessity to track and Q/A
8
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants What did we learn? Fastest way… linking to 2015 and open the cache Versions… of originating software also matters Initial setup makes big difference – coordinates, IFC format, what Export and Import settings to use etc.
9
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants How do we keep track of this? Excel spreadsheet with columns for key information Protects you: Q. why does beam look like that? A. because it was in the IFC like that Set up a detailed step-by-step workflow Reduce errors and you can develop it to perfection Share reporting spreadsheet with your team See examples on next slides
10
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Workflow steps here (sample) Open a Revit 2015 project, then Link IFC If this fails, Try Open IFC Close project, open IFC cache Save as - temporary Revit 2015 rvt file Delete orange voids in 2015 View Filter: "Reference" is greater than nothing, untick to hide real objects Unhide all categories, set view to Coordination Check item count against Bimsight Link Levels and Grids file, Bind, then Ungroup, and Pin Make DWG transform if there isn't already one Link the DWG transform at origin to origin Select all in 3D, switch to Floor Plan and move... untick constrain, but never tick disjoin Move point to point in Plan view Check section view for height… Move point to perpendicular in Section view Delete imported Grids Remove the DWG link Link coordinate file Acquire coordinates Unclip and move project base point in plan Location: Adelaide (Adelaide, Australia) Remove coordinate link Delete the locator elements Set Starting View details Delete Schedules Delete redundant views Enable Worksets Selective purge - only once - if you are too greedy it might delete and purge families! Set up 3D view Save as - FINAL Revit 2015 rvt file (this is a central) Refer to Handout

Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Tracking sheet examples
12
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants What about Export? Consider export IFC version Preferably 2x3 or IFC4 Example: façade model to steel contractor…
13
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Ok, so what do I need to get started? Older versions of Revit are inferior, Revit 2015 far far far far better Latest IFC addin for Revit 2015… why? Open source Often updated Increases quality and gives more options Works on both Import and Export
14
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Anything else we need? Best to update your Revit to latest possible service pack An IFC template.RTE file, set in Revit options Mapping files for: IFC export IFC import Maybe… some shared parameter or COBie stuff
15
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Guess what… its all in the showbag! Revit 2015 Update 8 Latest IFC addins (2013 to 2015), downloaded from Sourceforge Mapping export text file: all to Generic Models Mapping import text file: all to Structural Framing Latest open source mapping file (COBie etc) A sample IFC template file Sample workflow steps in handout (basic version) Sample tracking document Excel file
16
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Plus some more useful free software… Tekla BIMsight installer FZKViewer, for error checking and validation Solibri IFC Optimizer IFC Tree Viewer, Geometry Gym
17
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants
18
Let’s give it a try… Refer to your handout Open Revit, look at Options, start a new project Look at IFC settings Setup for import via link… check template Could use linked IFC as modelling context? Or open the link cache? The cache file is a little bit scary, so beware Do an export of new geometry to send back
19
Presenter: Luke Johnson, What Revit Wants Final tips You can use A360 as a free IFC viewer Be process-oriented Look for ways to automate repetitive tasks Don’t be afraid to pick up the telephone Ask about IFC settings they are using in their application Discuss project setup such as coordinates Find out about their skills and environment
