What is the most powerful word that you know? Write it on the index card and explain why it is powerful. If it is an expletive, use the *** to indicate that. Yes, I’m asking you to censor it. Welcome to public education. If you do NOT think there are ANY powerful words in our language, explain your reasoning for taking this position.

Who said it? “I have a dream…” “Mistakes were made…” “You can’t handle the truth!” “Show me the money!” “Fore score and seven years ago…” “We shall not fail…” “A rose by any other name…” “Ask not what your country…” “I’m going to make him an offer…” “The day the music died.” “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

W. Shakespeare JULIET: 'Tis but thy name that is my enemy; Thou art thyself, though not a Montague. What's Montague? it is nor hand, nor foot, Nor arm, nor face, nor any other part Belonging to a man. O, be some other name! What's in a name? that which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet; So Romeo would, were he not Romeo call'd, Retain that dear perfection which he owes Without that title. Romeo, doff thy name, And for that name which is no part of thee Take all myself. Words have power?
