3. Our Focus Today: We will be able to explore the functions of specific map tools (compass, scale, legend, and title) and longitude & latitude and apply these skills towards finding geographic locations.

4. How To Read A Map: Before we review this as a class, please turn to page xxxi in your textbook. Read over the page titled PLACE with the map on it. Think about these questions as you read. 1.What is the purpose of a legend? 2.What is the name of the tool that tells us the area and events the map covers? 3.What is the purpose of the scale tool? 4.Explain longitude – which direction does it go? 5.Explain latitude – which direction does it go? 6.What is the primary line of latitude? 7.What is the primary line of longitude? 8.What is it called when we divide the Earth into halves?

5. How To Read A Map: Things to look for when you get a map. Title – this will tell us the topic, date, and/or events the map shows. Legend – shows what the symbols, lines, and special colors mean on the map. Scale – displays real distance in measurable length (1 inch = 1,000 miles) Compass – shows directions

7. Term Definition Visual Imaginary lines that circle the globe from north to south, measuring an area’s distance east (E) or west (W) of the prime meridian. Longitude

8. Term Definition Visual Line of longitude that divides the Earth between West & East at 0 degrees. Prime Meridian

9. Using Longitude: If you see a degree (measurement) with E or W, then it is longitude. Examples: 40*E 40*W 0*E/W

10. Term Definition Visual Imaginary lines that circle the globe from east to west, measuring an area’s distance north (N) or south (S) of the equator. Latitude

11. Term Definition Visual Line of latitude that divides the Earth North and South at 0 degrees. Equator

12. Using Latitude: If you see a degree (measurement) with N or S, then it is latitude. Examples: 78*N 20*S 0*N/S

13. Using Longitude & Latitude What continent is: −15 degrees North latitude; 30 degrees East longitude −45 degrees South latitude; 60 degrees West longitude

What are degrees? −Measurement of longitude & latitude; 1 degree = 69 miles What are minutes? −Smaller measurement of longitude & latitude – 1 degree = 60 minutes. What are seconds? −Smallest measure of longitude & latitude – 1 minute = 60 seconds What purpose does longitude & latitude serve? −To find locations anywhere on the Earth; this is how GPS operates.
