If you give a man a fish, he eats for a day If you teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.
3
Who are the hungry? 870 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. 1 in 8 people are hungry in the world.
4
Hunger in Clinton County 2,950 people food insecure 14.2% of population Lathrop food pantry serves over 130 families
5
Who Feeds the World? Today one farmer produces food to feed 155 people in the world. In 1960, one farmer produced food to feed 25 people in the world. In the US, there are 24 million workers in agriculture.
6
The Future of Food Sustainable agriculture refers to farming practices that take care of current needs while not compromising the resources needed in the future
7
The Future of Food Fertilizers provide nutrients to the plants, not the soil
8
The Future of Food Our fertile soil is being stripped of the properties that make growing food easy
9
The Future of Food Farming is an essential part of our country's economy and food supply
11
The apple represents Earth, the skin of the apple Earth's surface and the core of the apple Earth's core. This activity looks at how much arable land (land available for growing crops) there is on Earth as a whole The apple represents the earth. The core is the earth's core, the flesh is the mantle, and the skin is the crust. Only 1/3 of what is left has soil that is good for farming We only use the top portion of the soil to grow crops
12
Roughly 75% of the earth is water, oceans, lakes and rivers.
13
Half of the land mass on earth is found in areas not available for food production, such as the polar regions, deserts and alpine areas. Remove these areas by cutting the remaining apple in half again.
14
There is now 12.5 percent of the apple left
15
An additional 1/8 is too cold, dry, or mountainous to live on Of the remaining earth apple, 40 percent cannot be used as it is too dry, too wet or too steep to grow food. Cut away this amount and look at what you have left.
16
You have left just a small slither of the apple. Peel the skin away from the apple and look the skin. This small strip of skin represents the amount of soil and land available for growing food
18
