Bellwork: 1.Write “Cup activity” on your page 2.With the person sitting next to you, stack the cups with the smallest thing on the bottom and the largest thing on the top.
2
Standard B.10C – Analyze the levels of organization in biological systems and relate the levels to each other and to the whole system Essential Question How do the levels of organization tie into characteristics of life?
3
Science Fact of the Day: A crocodile's tongue attaches to the roof of its mouth.
4
Agenda 1.Take notes over Characteristics of Life and Levels of Organization. Search youtube for “Jones 2016-2017 Characteristics of life” and take Cornell Style notes. 2.We will do a review Kahoot during the last 15 minutes of class because you have a test tomorrow. **If you get done with your notes before we are ready for the Kahoot, then you are welcome to look at the life stations around the room. Just be sure to get teacher permission if asked. OR you may study for your test**
5
Biology = The Study of Life Bio = "life" Biology Logos = "study of"
6
The 7 Characteristics of Life 1. Made of one or more cells Cells – the smallest unit of organisms that carry on the functions life. Unicellular – an organism composed of one cell Multicellular – An organism composed of many cells, different cells carry out different jobs (division of labor)
7
2. Displays Organization - cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism **Note: levels of organization are: atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism. LIFE begins at “CELL”
8
3. Growth and Development Growth – increase in size, adding cells and new structures (becomes bigger) Development – Natural changes that occur during growth (becomes more complex)
9
4. Reproduction – organisms produce new individuals. **Asexual or sexual** Asexual reproduction
10
5. Responds to stimuli Stimulus – anything that an organism responds to, either internal or external environment Response – the reaction of an organism to a stimulus (critical to survival) In the picture, heat is the stimulus and moving your hand is the response. In this picture the Orc is the stimulus and the scream (from the kid) is the response
11
6. Uses energy - to fuel their life functions. They get their energy from food or they use light energy to make their food
12
7. Maintains Homeostasis – The regulation of an organism’s internal environment to maintain life.
13
Thought question: Is fire alive? 1.Made of 1 or more cells 2.Displays organization 3.Growth and development 4.Reproduction 5.Responds to stimuli 6.Uses energy 7.Maintains homeostasis
14
Sometimes, nonliving things have one or more of life’s characteristics, but only when something has all of them can it then be considered living.
15
Anything that possesses all of the characteristics of life is known as an organism. **Organisms can be unicellular OR multicellular**
16
Choose one of the 3 things pictured below. If it was real, would it be considered living? Explain why or why not. 1. VAMPIRES 3. ZOMBIES 2. TRANSFORMERS
17
In the summary section of your notes, answer the essential question in 2 sentences.
