Maps What are the different kinds of maps?

Political Maps  Political maps show how humans have impacted the landscape. For example, city names, roads, country borders, etc. are all part of political maps.  A political map often uses colors to show the boundaries between states or countries.

Political Maps  Political maps change frequently (physical maps change very, very slowly through geologic processes) and must be redrawn often. A political map of the world that is 50 years old is no longer accurate.  Wars and ethnic conflict are two major causes political maps change.

Political Maps  Lets look at some examples of political maps.

Political Maps

Physical Maps  Physical maps show what the surface of the Earth looks like.  A physical map highlights Earth’s natural features, such as mountains and forests.

 Physical maps do not contain man made features.  For example, a physical map would be a map of what you would see if you were looking down on Earth from space. Physical Maps Notice you do not see country borders or city markings. These divisions are created by people.

Physical Maps  There are different types of physical maps. Relief Maps – Show the difference in height between land Elevation Maps – Show the elevation, or height above sea level.

Other Types of Maps  Special Purpose Maps such as climate maps or population density maps  Road Maps are another example  These maps present specific information that helps guide people in their daily life  Depending on the type of map, the information may be shown with different colors, arrows, dots, or other symbols

Your turn – our classroom  If we were to make a map of this classroom, what key items need to be included?  Teacher desk, front table, windows, door, bookcases, file cabinet, projector screen, whiteboards, student desks, large closet/cabinet

Your turn – our classroom  What important parts of a map did you learn yesterday that need to be included on every map?  Title, scale, legend/key, compass rose, locator map

Mapping our Classroom  Using the list of important parts of our classroom, begin mapping our room!  Don’t forget to include the items listed on your rubric  Use colored pencils or crayons to add details to your map

Wayfinding  In daily life, we most often use maps for wayfinding — finding our way from one place to another. Being able to read maps is, obviously, important to that activity, but so is being able to create them.  How often have you been asked to give directions to your school or your home? How often have you been given bad directions by somebody else?

Robotic Car Directions  A robotic toy car located at the back closet needs to find its way to the door to leave the classroom. Using the map you created, write directions that would guide the toy car out of the room. Make sure you tell the car which direction to travel (NOT right/left) and how far to go (two student desks, one teacher table, go past the flag)  Write your step by step directions on the back of your classroom map!

Wayfinding around Apex Middle Campus  On the second sheet of computer paper, now draw a map of the Apex Middle Campus.  What important landmarks should we include? Buildings?  For homework, use your map of the AMS Campus and write step by step directions to get to one of your elective classes or lunch (must be in a different building than Building B)  Remember to use directions (north/south/etc) and landmarks as turning points
