MAP SKILLS PART I 5 THEMES OF GEOGRAPHY

DO NOW THERE ARE NUMEROUS KINDS OF MAPS AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF INFORMATION DISPLAYED ON THEM. MATCH THESE MAPS WITH THEIR DESCRIPTIONS. 1.Political map A. Most distances, sizes, and shapes are correct 2.Physical map B. A smaller map set within the border of a larger one 3.Population map C. Shows countries, capitals, and major cities 4.Robinson projection map D. Shows geographic features and land coverage 5.Inset Map E. Indicates how many people live in an area

TWO KINDS OF GEOGRAPHY Physical Geography - study of the natural features that cover the Earth Cultural Geography - the study of the impact of human culture on the landscape

THEME ONE OF GEOGRAPHY: PLACE Now you try: Under the thumb are examples of Physical and Cultural Geography. First label which section is physical and which section is Cultural. Then label the examples. You have one minute.

THEME TWO OF GEOGRAPHY: LOCATION Absolute Location – describes the location of a place based on a fixed point on earth Relative Location – describes the location in relation to another point or place Now you Try: Where is your classmate?

THEME THREE OF GEOGRAPHY: HUMAN AND ENVIRONMENT INTERACTIONS Interactions between the human social system and (the “rest” of) the ecosystem. Now you try: Draw your own example of human and environment interactions

THEME FOUR OF GEOGRAPHY: HUMAN MOVEMENT Movement is the travel of people, goods, and ideas from one location to another Examples: Migration, Westward Expansion, Campaign Trail

THEME FIVE OF GEOGRAPHY: REGION Regions are areas with distinctive characteristics: human characteristics, such as demographics or politics, and physical characteristics, such as climate and vegetation. The United States is a political region because it shares one governmental system.

PROCESSING ACTIVITY: MAP OF MY SPACE Think about your favorite space, or place to be. (Ex: Living Room) Now draw a map of your favorite place. Next include the Five Themes of Geography and Label –You already have your Place, make that your title –Subtitle can be the Location (Ex: 2823 Cherry Tree Lane, center of the home) –Label an example of Human Environment Interactions –Label an example of Human Movement –Draw an inset map of the Region
