The Cost of Baby’s First Year You and your significant other have discovered that you are going to be parents. Please investigate the costs involved in the care of baby during the first year of life. You are trying to finish school and your parents are willing to pay for all of your tuition and books for online college so you can take care of the twins while completing your degree. #3 You are a 19 year old divorced mother with a new baby who was born 2 months premature. You make $2,000/month at your job and have insurance which pays all but 10% of all medical bills and medication. You receive $300 a month child support and qualify for government grants to finish school. #4 You are a single 18 year old father with a new baby who requires a special formula (additional $50 a month). The mother is suffering from severe post-partum depression and cannot care for the baby at this time. You make $1,500/month and have medical insurance. One of your parents is a professor at the local college and you can go to school there for free. You and the baby live in your parents home at no charge; your aunt is keeping the baby for you for just $50/week. #5 You are 19 years old and married with a new baby. You and your husband live in his parents’ basement apartment for free. You combined household income is $2,000/month with insurance benefits that cover all but 20%. #6 You are a 23 year old divorced mother with a new baby. You receive $500 a month in child support. You make $1,000/month and have no medical insurance; however, your ex-husband’s insurance will cover the baby’s medical bills. You inherited your Grandma’s house and do not need to pay rent; you must pay real estate taxes of $200/month. #7 You are 24 years old and single with a new baby who is sick with allergies/asthma. These medical issues will cause you to spend an additional $150/month on medical and pharmaceutical bills. You are working full-time and trying to finish school. You make $2,000/month and have health insurance. #8 You are a married 38 year old a with a new baby who has downs syndrome. Your baby requires special care at a cost of $300/month. You have decided to stay home with your baby and your family income has dropped from $9,000/month to $6,000/month. Your family has full medical covering 90% of medical charges. #9 You are a 26 year old married mother who has a new baby who suffers from colic and cries at least 8 hours a day. You’re husband earns $2,000 by managing an apartments complex which includes a rent-free apartment. You earn an additional $2,500 and have medical insurance for the family. You need full-time child care. #10 You are a 28 year old married mom with a new baby who requires a special formula which costs $60/month. Your spouse suddenly died leaving you without any life insurance. You make $2,500 with 80% health insurance coverage. Conclusion See Mrs. Hanson and draw from the basket one Lucky Day situation and one Bad Day situation. How do these life events impact the first year with baby? Each team member please write your own 1 page paper summarizing what you have learned about the cost of baby’s first year by doing this project.
