5 WHAT IS A DEMOCRACY? People choose their leaders. Everybody over 18 can vote. Choice of political groups or parties to vote for

6 WHAT IS A DEMOCRACY? The country decides on the leader by voting, and this will happen every few years. Even the government must obey the laws. People have freedom of speech.

7 What is a Dictatorship?

8 NO CHOICE… In a Dictatorship, you don’t have a choice in who you vote for … If elections ‘allowed’ only one choice  You cannot vote a dictator out of power

9 WHAT IS A DICTATORSHIP? Government uses any means to stay in power for as long as they can. The Government makes their own rules. People are not allowed to criticise the government or worship the religion of their choice.

17 LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING SLIDE. Using the information decide if the leader is a dictator or a democratic leader.

18 WINSTON CHURCHILL He was made prime minister on the same day that Germany invaded Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg ending the 'Phoney War'. He led Britain to victory throughout the second half of World War II. In the July General Election after the war the Conservatives led by Churchill were defeated by Labour. Clement Attlee was the new Prime Minister.

21 BENITO MUSSOLINI 1883 – 1945. Controlled Italy 1922 - 45. Charisma – appealed to people Wanted to make Italy a world power. He was voted in but then introduced laws that said that only his political party could rule. Joined Hitler in WWII.

23 ADOLF HITLER 1889 – 1945. WWI veteran/hero. Head of Nazi Party – controlled Germany 1933-45. His motto was “Have no pity. Act brutally.” WWII - conquered most of Europe. Anyone who disagreed with his views was killed or imprisoned. Final Solution – wipe out European Jews.

25 BARACK OBAMA American President Voted in by the people in the USA Is in favour of legalizing same sex marriage. After four years in office he will need to be voted in again if the people want him to. An American President cannot serve more than two terms in office (8 years)

27 HELLE THORNING-SCHMIDT Thorning-Schmidt served as a Member of the European Parliament for Denmark from 1999 to 2004 before being voted in by the people to the Danish Parliament in 2005. She was elected to replace Mogens Lykketoft as Leader of the Social Democrats after the 2005 parliamentary election, leading her party through the 2007 parliamentary election after which she was appointed Prime Minister by Queen Margrethe II
