6. Calculating the Tax I added the total of everyone’s meal, and the subtotal was $143.20. I then multiplied the subtotal by the Tarrant County Tax rate of 8.25%. t = 8.25% $ 143.20 100% $143.20 x.0825 = $11.81 t = $11.81

7. Calculating the Tip The waiters at Silver Fox always do a great job so I am going to tip 20%. I took the subtotal and multiplied it by 20%. p = 20% $143.20 100% $143.20 x.20 = $28.64 t = $28.64 Total Cost of the Meal Now I can calculate the total cost of the meal by adding the subtotal, tax and tip. $143.20 + $11.81 + $28.64 = $183.65

8. Real World Application The process of figuring tax and tip on a meal is something that everyone will do in their lives. You can also use this formula at other places than just a restaurant. For example, you usually need to tip your hair stylist or dog groomer. You also need to know how to figure sales tax anytime you buy anything at a store.

9. Observations I learned that most tips are calculated on the subtotal before the tax. I need to go to college and get a good job to afford this meal! If a waiter does a good job at an expensive restaurant they could probably make a few hundred dollars in tips per night!

10. Definitions Gratuity- If you are satisfied with someone’s services you give them an additional amount of money as a thank you. Sales tax- An amount of money added to the subtotal price that is collected by the government. Subtotal price- The price before taxes or tips. Total price- The final price you will pay that can include the subtotal prices taxes and gratuity.
