Journal #4 – Due Monday, August 15th Bring a hard copy to instructor (two pages typed). Due on Monday, August 15th. Do brief research on the Internet or other resources: Discuss how William Stokoe proved ASL as a language. How did people including the Deaf people react to Stokoe’s findings? Ask few people including your friends who don’t know ASL questions about ASL and Deaf culture. How do you explain to them the nature of ASL and Deaf culture? Investigate why ASL is an oppressed language.

Amber’s Neighborhood 2. tell what Amber’s neighborhood is like –type of neighborhood and area a mixture of apartment buildings and houses, most of which are over 100 years old; her apartment is in a large house built in 1906 –what’s nearby and convenient one block away are many shops, coffee houses, a grocery store, restaurants, clothing stores, shoe shops, dog stores, a post office, an ice cream parlor, a theatre. One mile away is a large arts college –who lives in the neighborhood mostly college students and artists, some young families

Amber’s Neighborhood 4. tell what she likes and doesn‘t like about the area It’s close to many places and everything is within walking distance. In the morning, she walks over to have a cup of coffee and read a newspaper. If she wants to buy some groceries, she can walk to a nearby market. At night, she and her husband can walk to a nearby restaurant, and then walk to go see a movie, then on the way home, stop for some ice cream. On Sundays, she walks to the farmer’s market. However, sometimes students at the school across the street litter the sidewalks, and she would have to clean up.
