By Andrew Sorrell AGR 600 TECHNOLOGY AND IT’S IMPACT ON SOCIETY
2
DEFINITION OF TECHNOLOGY According to Merriam-Webster the definition of technology is: The use of science in industry, engineering, etc. To invent useful things or to solve problems A machine, piece of equipment, method etc. that is created by technology
3
MY DEFINITION OF TECHNOLOGY Technology is anything that advances life-styles for mankind. Technology is anything that makes a specific task or job easier /quicker to complete for humans Technology is anything that increase health and living for mankind
4
POSITIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Agriculture Technology has allowed us in agriculture to expand our production where one farmer can now feed around 150 people compared to around 20 in 1960’s We have been able to create GMO crops that have provided us with more production per acre, disease resistant, and insect resistant. We are able to grow crops with less tillage and impact on the environment through technology We have used technology to create fertilizer that will be used to increase our crops potential. Technology also has been implemented to agriculture equipment to collect data and make what we call precision farming through GPS.
5
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Agriculture With all the good technology has done for agriculture there is potential for negative on society GMO crops pose a potential danger for human consumption We have not yet seen how no tillage crops or reduced tillage crops will effect our soils Artificially created fertilizer creates more run-off pollution for the environment More advanced equipment has created a more expensive tool for farmers to use, which then results in a more expensive end product for consumer.
6
POSITIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Travel/Transportation Through technology mankind’s ability to travel and transport items has increased greatly. We have created the ability to move ourselves and items to areas we need to with technology, and decrease the time it takes through the following technological advances Road/Cars Air/Planes Water/Boats/Ships Space/shuttles
7
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Travel/Transport With travel becoming more available and cheaper to mankind, more people are traveling or transporting items. This increases accidents/deaths in any form of transportation Increases our pollution on environment Allows us to become a global society and access places we want ( which is not always a good thing)
8
POSITIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Communication Through technology we have created a global society where we can communicate and share information with almost anyone and everyone with multiple forms of communication methods. Also we can communicate almost at anytime or anywhere we want. Television Radio Internet Social media
9
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Communication Through our technological advances in communication we have access to large amounts of information. (This is not always a good thing) Our personal information and daily lives revolve around communication technology. ( This is also not a very good thing) We have become a society reliant on social media and communication devices
10
POSITIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Education We have used technology to advance the way our students learn. We have integrated technology into the curriculum to allow students to have the most updated form of information and ways of mastering objectives/standards. Smartboards/interactive T.V.’s Internet/online classes I pads/computers Equipment
11
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF TECHNOLOGY ON SOCIETY Education Students rely on technology way to much for learning Technology is sometimes a distraction in the classroom Students can use technology in inappropriate ways ( adults do to sometimes) Cyber-bulling of students now is a major factor due to technology
