6.5ABC Elements and Compounds-Answers Lab Activity: Matter Part I-Explore Lab Journal p. 1-2 Directions: You are to view this PowerPoint and correct in red ink, any questions you had wrong. If your answers are correct, give yourself a smiley face or check plus mark. You may write the correct answer in the margins or above the question. Do not erase your old answer. Check for this) 2. The symbol for copper is Cu (upper case/lower case) 3. The symbol for Krypton is Kr (upper case/lower case)

6. A pure substance is matter that is made of only one kind of matter, is uniform throughout, and has consistent properties 7. An element is a pure substance that is made of only one type of atom that cannot be broken down into a simpler substance. 8. Elements are identified on the periodic table by a symbol and name (also atomic number and atomic mass)
9
9. One or two letters are used to identify and element. If it is one letter, the letter is a capital letter. If two letters, the first letter is capitalized, the second letter is lower case. 10 There are only TWO elements which are found in all components of the Earth. They are Hydrogen and Oxygen **Of all the 117 + know elements only a very few make up all known matter in significant quantities on the Earth.
