Daoism: When it started Daoism developed in China between 700 B.C.E.- 300 B.C.E. This was a time of great political turmoil in China

Daoism: What it means Daoism means the way of nature Daoism is a philosophy of nature, stressing humanity’s need to adapt to its natural surroundings and not try to change things that fit their needs. Daoism is a belief system based on the teachings of Lao Tzu, “The Master.”

Daoism Beliefs Daoists believe that the universe is united by Dao, a mysterious force (higher power) that determines destiny and cannot be changed Trying to change or alter Dao causes pain and suffering

Daoist Beliefs Personal gain and possessions are the sources of human conflict. People should reject society and live in harmony with nature People who truly seek Dao should not worry about life and should instead let events take their natural course and not interfere with the natural way of things

Daoism and Government Daoists oppose large government with many laws because they interfere with the natural way of doing things. According to Daoists, too many laws and social rules get in the way of living naturally and following the Dao. Many laws just cause conflict because they impose unnatural controls on people.

Daoism The best rulers are those who rule the least. Daoism encouraged rulers to rule less harshly. Ideal society would be small and isolated because then people can revert back to the basic ways of doing things
