2 F ATHER W ILHELM K LEINSORGE :  1948 named priest at large church  Becomes Japanese citizen and changes his name to Father Makota Takamura  Never gets over radiation sickness  Tirelessly works to help and convert people in Hiroshima- friends thought he actually might literally kill himself with kindness (always taking care of others and not him).  1961 moves to small church in Mukaihara  1966 hires new cook and becomes friends with 35 year old Satsue Yoshiki  1976 falls and hurts his back- bedridden until death in 1977  She cares for him through his illness – “living dead”  His grave never goes untended – always has flowers from Satsue

3 M ISS T OSHIKO S ASAKI :  Younger brother and sister alive- weren't in family home at time of bombing  Fiancé leaves her  Puts her siblings in an orphanage  Works in orphanages- nursery school teacher for 6 years  3 operations on her leg (leg looks fairly normal and she can walk, but never fully recovers and constantly in pain)  Kept in close contact with Father Kleinsorge  1957 becomes a nun – Fr. Kleinsorge’s suggestion  Helps to take care of elderly- helps them die in peace  Travels around the world – visits the Pope  1980 honored at dinner in Tokyo for her work as a nun  Gives speech at dinner and says she was given a spare life after bomb. Also says she prefers not to look back- keep moving forward  Felt that too much attention paid to power of bomb instead of the evil of war
