2 KidsMatter Primary is a mental health and wellbeing framework for primary schools and is proven to make a positive difference to the lives of Australian children. KidsMatter Primary provides the methods, tools and support to help schools work with parents and carers, health services and the wider community, to nurture happy, balanced kids. 4 components 1.Positive school community 2.Social and Emotional learning 3.Working with parents and carers 4.Helping children with mental health difficulties

3 Since January 2013 Resilient Youth Australia has surveyed 101,107 students (50,456 females and 50,651 males) in Years 3 to 12, in over 400 government and independent schools, across Australia. South Australia in 2016  19 schools  5 partnerships  Years 3-12

5 What is the Resilience Survey? The proprietary Resilience Survey is an on-line survey which collects, collates and analyses the self-reported strengths of Australian young people in terms of 40 developmental assets, the incidence of depressive disorders and hopefulness, and the relationship of these to key risk and protective factors. The Resilience Survey includes three scientifically validated, reliable and internationally accepted measures: the Developmental Assets Profile (DAP), the Childrens' Hope Scale, and the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ12).

6 Building resilience involves creating the three things every parent wants for their child, every teacher wants for their students, and every community wants for its young people. 7 What is resilience? Resilience is the ability to draw upon the strengths within yourself and around you to flexibly respond to life while remaining true to yourself and creating positive relationships with others. The more resilience our students have the more likely they are to have a safe, healthy and fulfilling life.

9 What you think of yourself is much more important than what others think of you The path to happiness is doing something that is meaningful to you and makes a difference to others. It is not indulgence. Later developing kids turn out to be the highest achievers.

10 SAFE PATHWAY Feeling SAFE is a basic need and the right of all young people. 1. Empowerment Domain: high levels of empowerment suggest that a young person feels safe across many contexts in their life, including safe from bullying and cyber bullying, and valued and respected by others. 2. Belonging Domain: high levels of belonging are associated with significantly increased thriving with lower involvement in a wide range of risk behaviours. 3. Boundaries and Expectations Domain: high levels are strongly and consistently related to a variety of positive youth outcomes, particularly higher academic achievement. 4. Adult Support Domain: high levels suggest that a young person with a safe, warm and supportive family, where at least one adult or caring parent loves and cares for you and listens to you, are associated with lower risk behaviours and higher academic achievement.

11 SAFE PATHWAY Empowerment: Do you feel safe and secure at home? Do you feel safe and secure at school? Do you care about school?

12 SAFE PATHWAY Belonging: Are you eager to achieve? Do teachers encourage you? Do you spend quality time with your parents?

13 SAFE PATHWAY Belonging: Do your parents encourage you to do well at school? Do you think your parents are good at talking with you? Are you part of a club, sport or similar?

14 SAFE PATHWAY Belonging: Can you build friendships with other people? Do you have friends who set good examples? Do you have at least two groups of friends?

15 SAFE PATHWAY Boundaries and expectations: Do you feel encouraged by your teachers? Adult support: Do you have adults who care about you? Do you feel adults listen to you? Do you have good adult role models?

16 HEALTHY PATHWAY Our Healthy Pathway measures 2 domains: Hope, and Healthy Mind and Health Body. 1. Hope Domain: The anticipation that good things will happen in the future and that we have the ability to make some of those good things happen is the basis of hope. If learned helplessness is a key predictor of the likelihood of depression, “learned hopefulness” is an antidote. We measure Hope using the Children’s Hope Scale, left by Dr C R Snyder in the public domain. 2. Health Mind and Healthy Body Domain: Mind Health is the ability to manage worry and stress and remain confident.

17 HEALTHY PATHWAY Sleep and concentration: Do you lose sleep through worry? Are you able to concentrate?

18 HEALTHY PATHWAY Mental health: Are you constantly under strain? Are you unhappy or depressed?

19 HEALTHY PATHWAY Mental health: Confidence and worth Are you losing confidence? Do you feel worthless? Healthy body Do you get 8 hours of sleep?

20 FULFILLING PATHWAY The "Fulfilling Pathway" relates to the values, skills and beliefs that allow young people to embrace, enjoy and contribute to the world around them. 1. Educational Engagement Domain: this covers both the motivation and rewards related to learning, and active engagement in learning. 2. Social Skills Domain: these are the abilities that young people need to interact with others in their world, such as navigating cultural differences, building friendships, and resolving conflicts peacefully. 3. Positive Identity Domain: reflects a young person's emerging identity, and includes self-esteem, optimism, and a growing sense of purpose in life. 4. Positive Values Domain: developing and deepening personal values is a crucial aspect of a young person's development, and eventually become deep commitments that guide how they think and act.

23 FULFILLING PATHWAY Honesty Do you stand up for what you believe in? Do you tell the truth even when it’s not easy?

24 FULFILLING PATHWAY Positive values: optimism Do you feel in control of your life and your future? Do you feel positive about your future?

25 FULFILLING PATHWAY Positive values: compassion Do you think it’s important to help others?
