BELLRINGER 1.Mina bought a plane ticket to New York City and used a coupon for 15% off the ticket price. The total cost of her ticket, with the discount, was $253.30. Write an equation she could use to find the price of the ticket without the discount. 2.Lucas bought a refrigerator. His total cost of $1,331 included sales tax at the rate of 8% and an additional, untaxed delivery charge of $35. How much sales tax did he pay?

BELLRINGER - DEBRIEF 1.Mina bought a plane ticket to New York City and used a coupon for 15% off the ticket price. The total cost of her ticket, with the discount, was $253.30. Write an equation she could use to find the price of the ticket without the discount. x = the orginial cost of the plane ticket original cost – discount = cost with discount x – 0.15(x) = 253.30 2.Lucas bought a refrigerator. His total cost of $1,331 included sales tax at the rate of 8% and an additional, untaxed delivery charge of $35. How much sales tax did he pay? r = the orginial cost of the refrigerator original cost + sales tax + delivery charge = total cost r + 0.08(r) + 35 = 1331 r + 0.08(r) = 1296 (this is the cost before delivery charge) 1.08r = 1296 r = 1200 (be careful – this is the original cost!) 1296 – 1200 = $96

MINI LESSON Inequalities are similar to equations in that they are mathematical sentences. They are different in that they are not equal all the time. An inequality has infinite solutions, instead of only having one solution like a linear equation. Setting up the inequalities will follow the same process as setting up the equations did.

Common Error forgetting to switch the inequality symbol when multiplying or dividing by a negative

WORK SESSION Example 1 Juan has no more than $50 to spend at the mall. He wants to buy a pair of jeans and some juice. If the sales tax on the jeans is 4% and the juice with tax costs $2, what is the maximum price of jeans Juan can afford?
12
WORK SESSION Example 1 James earns $15 per hour as a teller at a bank. In one week he pays 17% of his earnings in state and federal taxes. His take-home pay for the week is $460.65. How many hours did James work?
13
WORK SESSION Example 2 Alexis is saving to buy a laptop that costs $1,100. So far she has saved $400. She makes $12 an hour babysitting. What’s the least number of hours she needs to work in order to reach her goal?

WORK SESSION Practice 1.2.2 #1-6
15
WORK SESSION Practice 1.2.2 #1-6 1. x ≤ 55 2. x ≤ 60 3. 19 + x ≥ 39; x ≥ 20; She needs to save $20 or more. 4. 20x ≥ 1800; x ≥ 90; You must work 90 hours or more. 5. 83 + x ≥ 180; x ≥ 97; Hiram must get a score of 97 points or more. 6. 15x + 10 ≤ 100; x ≤ 6; Claire can buy up to 6 DVDs.

CLOSING A recreation center holds a soccer game every Saturday morning for older teens. The group agreed that there should be at least 5 players on each team. One team started out with 17 players.
