1
0-3 Addition and Subtraction with Integers Goals: Add and subtract integers Use addition and subtraction to solve real life problems *
2
Vocabulary Opposites – two points that are the same distance from zero. Absolute Value – distance from zero (never negative)
3
Opposites Find the opposite of each number: 1.2 2.-5 3.-6 4.13
4
Absolute value Find the absolute value of each number: 1.3 2.-16 3.38 4.-5
5
Rules of Addition Same sign (both positive or both negative) ▫Add the absolute value of the two numbers and keep the sign EX: -5 + -2 = -7 Different sign (one positive, one negative) ▫Subtract the number with the smaller absolute value from the number with the larger absolute value, and use the sign of the number with the larger absolute value. EX: 7 + (-3) = 4 -6 + 3 = -3
6
Examples 1.-2 + 5 2.2 + (-6) 3.-4 + (-8) 4.-3 + 5 + (-6) 5.5 + (-2) + 3 6.-4 + 6 + (-2) = 3 = -4 = -12 = -4 = 6 = 0
7
Subtraction Rule Add the opposite: ▫5 – 3 means 5 + (-3) = 2 ▫-6 – 8 means -6 + (-8) = -14 ▫10 – (-13) means 10 + 13 = 23 ▫-16 – (-9) means -16 + 9 = -7
8
Examples 1.-4 – 3 2.10 – 11 3.12 – 6 4.-2 – (-6) 5.-15 – 22 6.25 – (-13) = -7 = -1 = 6 = 4 = -37 = 38
9
Examples 1.3 – (-4) – 2 + 8 2.10 – 5 + 14 – (-18) 3.-5 – (-3) + 4 – 1 4.2 – (-3) – 6 = 13 = 37 = 1 = -1

Practice Worksheet “0-3 Adding and Subtracting Integers”
11
Word Problem #1 You are in a submarine that is 500 feet below the surface of the water. You go down 150 more feet. What is your current depth? -650 feet
12
Word Problem #2 You borrowed $10 from your uncle. You paid him back $5. How much money do you owe now? $5
