Fission Target Calculations Neutronic calculations (yield & angular distribution) for real converter/target geometry FLUKA, MCNPx. (CERN) Codes validation. Set benchmark calculations of different Monte Carlo codes, which will be used in design studies. Selected codes FLUKA and MCNPx. Materials: C, Be, Si, Fe, Hg, Pb, Ta, W, Th, U. Beam energy (protons and neutrons) 150 -1500 MeV (CEA, CERN, JYFL, NIPNE, UW) Fission target design First target design integrated with MW neutron converter. (CERN) Nuclear calculation for the given converter/target design in view of energy deposition, activation and dose rates. (PSI)

Comparison between Low Density and High Density Uranium Carbide targets. Measurements of production yields and release times of Rb, Cs. 10 days beam time at Gatchina (1/6 – 5/6 and 9/ - 13/6). Data analysis in progress. (GANIL, CNRS/IN2P3, LNL) (PNPI Gatchina) Design and construction of the first prototype of the oven for the 238 UC target. Prototype in steel to test mechanical rigididy and temperature distribution. Thermal calculations using 3D-IDEAS code. (GANIL, CNRS/IN2P3) Ion sources Design and manufacturing of a prototype of a FEBIAD-type (Nitschke) ion source (CNRS/IN2P3, NIPNE)

Design and construction of the first prototype of the oven for the 238UC target. With this prototype made of steel the tests consist in checking the mechanical rigidity and the temperature distribution. Thermal calculations using 3D-IDEAS code. The next prototype will be manufactured in Ta and tested to validate the calculations. Oven Prototype

Design and assembly of the Febiad type ion source having a radial cathode. The first prototype has been designed and manufactured. Vacuum and high voltage have been successfully tested on the off-line isotope separator. Cooling and power supply systems have been upgraded. First beams are foreseen in July. Ion Source

Task Meetings March 10 – 11 at CERN: joint meeting Tasks #2, #3, #4, #5 the coordinator of Task #7 (driver) was invited Technical meeting and work sharing June 7 – 10 at CEA-Saclay: set benchmark calculations of different Monte Carlo codes. FLUKA and MCNPx Hiring of personnel CEA-Saclay: post doctoral position in the area of spallation reaction duration 1 year (open) LNL: researcher position in the area of fission target - duration 37 months (assigned)
