The arts bring diversity to a wide audience of people e.g. films and music Museums and exhibitions give people an understanding of cultures from around the world. This includes the past as well as today Plays and theatre show other cultures

Music – musicians work together from different cultures, races to form new music and mixtures of music. How have the arts affected you?

In a recent survey in Britain Chow Mein was voted the favourite food with Chicken Tikka Massala People now enjoy spicy foods and this is partly due to our multi-cultural society and the fact people are travelling to different countries.

Health care professionals should as service users about food likes and dislikes as well as what they can and cannot eat to respect diversity

Diverse cultures are included in the national curriculum Schools and colleges include studies in lots of languages and cultures Education has benefited from people from different background becoming managers and so making positive changes in relation to diversity

Equality, diversity and rights training in the health and social care profession has increased and become part of all professional training. All organisations are required by law to train staff in equality, diversity and rights which is usually done at induction Education is important in helping to get rid of ignorance about diversity.

Learning another language can be beneficial Interpretation is seen as a career in health and social care Many young people now learn a different language to GCSE level and above

Difference has to be accepted We have to care for people who may be making decisions we do not necessarily agree with.

Tolerance is very important in health and social care. People may have different views from you which we have to accept as we are all individuals. You have to be mature and professional when working with colleagues and helping people even though you may not want to or agree with them.

This is also called community cohesion and is where a community (social group) sticks together (cohesion) Belonging to a community is very important to human behaviour as it provides a safe and understanding environment, and a group that sticks together

Working in diverse health and social care teams requires each member to respect all the others in the team and to value each person as an individual.

All social and cultural benefits will bring about cultural enrichment through diversity this will ◦ Improve life for everyone ◦ Improve conditions and life for those working in health and social care ◦ Improve the care of those accessing health and social care provision
