13 Second Grade Curriculum / Language Arts Our Language Arts series is called Storytown. It includes the subject areas of Phonics, Reading, Grammar, and Spelling. Phonics Skills: The students will learn about short and long vowels, r-controlled vowels, syllable patterns, consonant blends, digraphs, dipthongs, contractions, suffixes, prefixes, homonyms, antonyms and synonyms. Reading: Students will be learning about different genres, comprehension skills and strategies, and vocabulary Grammar: Students will be learning about parts of speech and grammar rules. In addition, we will cover three kinds of writing: narrative, expository and persuasive. / Language Arts Our Language Arts series is called Storytown. 15 Spelling / We will be using the Storytown spelling this year. / Coincides with phonics skill each week. / Introduce words on Mondays / Test on Fridays-this is the grade reflected on report cards / Students have a chance to try the challenge words for bonus points each week / In addition to Storytown spelling, we will be learning and practicing the 2 nd grade core words. These are high frequency words that students should know how to spell, read and write.
