4 What is historiography? History is not static! It is dynamic, debatable, and constantly changing. Two historians looking at the same event and facts will arrive at two different conclusions. The study of how history changes over time The study of different interpretations of history For example – when studying U.S. imperialism: 1900’s: necessary to create sphere of influence = world power 2000’s: restrictive of individual rights = oppressive The study of historians’ methods What sources do they use? 5 Appointment Discussion Activity: 20 th Century Warfare You will participate in a discussion activity to evaluate the pros/cons of warfare. For this appointment discussion activity, you will discuss four questions with four different people. The purpose of this is to DISCUSS!!! Right now, you are just going to find partners for each of your four appointments. Follow my directions! Do NOT move ahead!

6 Appointment #1 Why do countries go to war? Are there good AND bad reasons? Is there such thing as a “just” war? Give examples!

7 Appointment #2 Is all fair in warfare? Should limits be placed on weapons or strategies used in war? Do you agree there should be “rules of war?”

8 Appointment #3 What factors make wars popular or unpopular with the general public? What role can the media play in this perception?

9 Appointment #4 The German philosopher Emmanuel Kant argued that “one’s natural state is a state of war.” What does he mean by this? Is war more “natural” than peace? To what extent do you agree?

11 Causes of World War I For homework tonight, read about one of the long-term causes of WWI – militarism & industrialization. (pages 106-111) As you read, highlight, annotate and fill in the “militarism” section of your note packet! Remember to use what works for you! We will not have enough time to review every single detail so how will you remember the content?
