Periodic Table 8.5C Interpret the arrangement of the Periodic Table to explain how properties are used to classify elements.

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? The periodic table is an arrangement of known elements based on atomic # and chemical & physical properties. 3 main categories 1.Metals 2.Nonmetals 3.Metalloids

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? Organized base on 3 things: Atomic structure (number of valence electrons) Atomic number (number of protons) Chemical & Physical properties (reactivity level)

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? Reactivity is a chemical property; if an element reacts, it will change to a different substance. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FofPjj7v414

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? Each column is called a group/family. The elements in each group have the same number of valence electrons (electrons in the outermost shell). ****They are the electrons involved in chemical bonds with other elements. ***

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? The Valence (group number) determines the level of reactivity. Groups 1 & 2 are “givers” because they only have a few valence electrons. They will give their electrons when reacting with other elements.

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? Group 1A are called Alkali metals (except hydrogen)- highly reactive Group 8a are called Noble gases - nonreactive
9
8A1A1A Group 1A is highly reactive Group 8A is non-reactive Groups 2A – 7A are reactive

Periodic Table August 25, 2016 1 st Destiny Chavez How is the periodic table organized? When you look at the periodic table, each row is called a period. All of the elements in a period have the same number of energy levels.
