Lab Safety Rules

PREPARING FOR LABORATORY WORK 1. Study procedures prior to beginning the lab.

2. Never perform unauthorized experiments. Do not start until you have been given permission. Do not enter supply closets or take anything from the lab.

3. Keep your lab area organized and free of apparel, books, and other clutter.

4. Wash all acids and bases from your skin immediately with plenty of running water.

5. Know how to use the safety shower, eye wash, fire extinguisher, and their locations.

6. If chemicals get in your eyes, wash eyes for at least 15 minutes with an eyewash.

DRESS FOR LABORATORY WORK 1.Tie back long hair. 2.Do not wear loose sleeves. 3.Wear closed toe shoes

4.Wear aprons. 5.Wear safety goggles (even if you wear glasses or contacts. Let your teacher know). 6.Wear gloves.

The following is not acceptable

AVOID CONTACT WITH CHEMICALS 1.Never taste or touch chemicals. 2.Only sniff chemicals using the proper procedures.

Do NOT smell the flask directly

Carefully waft the vapor from the flask toward your nose with your hand. Keep the flask quite distant from your face

3. When heating substances, point them away from people.

4. Never carry dangerous chemicals or hot equipment near other people.

AVOID HAZARDS 1.Keep combustibles away from open flames.

2. Use caution when handling hot glassware (tongs or oven mit).

3. When diluting acid, always add acid slowly to water.

4.Turn off equipment when not in use. 5.Keep caps on reagent bottles. Never switch caps. Never add unused chemicals to original container.

6. To add a rubber stopper to glass you should lubricate, use gloves, and twist.

CLEAN UP 1. Read lab paper or Consult teacher for clean up procedures.

2.Wash hands thoroughly following experiments. 3.Leave laboratory area clean and neat.

IN CASE OF ACCIDENT 1.Report all accidents and spills to your teacher immediately.

IN CASE OF ACCIDENT 2.Turn in any chipped or broken lab equipment for a replacement.
