9 In the event of an evacuation of this building: You MUST be together as a group at the south east corner of the staff parking lot. Failure to comply will result in lunch detention or worse.

10 Safety contract must be signed (student & parent) and returned before you participate in any lab activity.

13 Must be signed and returned before completing the first lab. Failure to returned signed document results in an alternative assignment during class and a make-up lab with an angry instructor.

16 BASICS OF LABORATORY SAFETY

17 Before Beginning Any Laboratory Exercise Know the dangers associated with all materials you will use in this laboratory exercise Know the proper way of using all the materials provided for the exercise Know all the protective measures you must use during the exercise

18 Personal Protection Wear an apron or lab coat in the proper manner Wear gloves in the proper manner Wear a safety glasses / face shield in the proper manner

19 Personal Protection Tie long hair neatly at the back of the neck Wear shoes that enclose your entire feet Safety glasses / Goggles must be worn when heating anything, using chemicals or glassware.

24 Emergency Procedures Know where all exits are located If a reagent splashes onto your face or eyes, wash your face at the eyewash station for several minutes

26 Emergency Procedures If an irritating or harmful reagent splashes onto your body, use the emergency shower to wash your body for several minutes Know the location of the following: Emergency shower Fire extinguisher Fire blanket Broken glass disposal boxes Sharps disposal boxes Trash cans Safety glasses cabinet Hot gloves and aprons

30 Emergency Procedures If a reagent spills onto the workbench or floor, notify the instructor immediately for cleanup instructions. If a glass container gets broken, notify the instructor immediately for cleanup instructions. Report all accidents, injuries and close calls immediately to the instructor.

31 Good Laboratory Conduct Follow all instructions Do not play in the laboratory Do not use any laboratory equipment until you are told to do so Do not perform any laboratory procedure until you are told to do so

32 Good Laboratory Conduct Do not bring food or beverages into the laboratory Do not eat or drink in the laboratory Do not apply cosmetics in the laboratory Restrain loose clothing, jewelry, and long hair. Do not block the aisle with chairs, book bags, etc.

33 Before You Leave The Laboratory Clean your workbench at the beginning and at the end of the laboratory exercise Leave all equipment, samples and reagents in the lab Leave your PPE in the lab Wash your hands with soap and water

34 Book bags, Purses, etc. All items except those you are currently working with (usually your notebook, book, and writing instruments) must be –under your chair, –under your table, –stacked neatly at the front of the room. No items may in anyway block the aisles.
