Objectives I can explain the difference between mastery and proficiency. I can understand what the different language proficiency levels are.

Essential Questions What is the difference between proficiency and mastery? How can I distinguish the different proficiency levels?

Mastery can be measured in a percentage shows how much of the language you KNOW Ex: I can write down 80% of the vocabulary words from this unit

Proficiency can be measured in proficiency levels shows WHAT YOU CAN DO with the language Ex: I can write an introduction about myself in complete sentences (intermediate low)

Confused about proficiency? Think about it like a SPORT you can KNOW all of the trick shots in soccer But when you USE them effectively in a game, that shows you have a high soccer proficiency level

Novice Low Can use basic vocabulary words. No complete sentences.

Novice Mid Can create broken sentences and lists using basic vocabulary.

Novice High Can create short sentences using 4 words or less to describe things.

NAME THAT PROFICIENCY LEVEL! On the next few slides I’m going to project sentences or phrases in English. You will read the sentence/phrase and then on your white board write the correct proficiency level. Be thinking about evidence: why did you select that proficiency level?

Guess that Level! Each group will read its description The other groups will conference and then write down the proficiency level they guess If called on, the group must provide evidence/tell us why you think it's that level
