Disrupted models IBM Mainframe disrupted by Personal Computer, now iPad/Tablet Diaries, Contacts, Cameras disrupted by Mobile phone Kodak industries disrupted (and bankrupted) by Digital technologies Bookshops disrupted by Amazon, Book Depository Hotels disrupted by Airbnb Taxis disrupted by Uber In the 1950’s and 1960’s IBM has mainframe computers which worked for teams of slave computers on which word processing would be done as well as other administrative systems. Along came the humble Personal Computer (PC) and the Macintosh which appealed to a new generation of post-war Baby Boomers who craved individuality. The PC grew so powerful and omnipresent so that the whole system dynamic changed with the data and power being decentralised and mobile. The mainframe grew out of favour being overtaken by Microsoft and Apple .. amongst others. IBM has never recovered as it sought to re-invent itself. The manufacturers of paper diaries di not see the PDA coming which created mobile devices to store both calendars and contacts. The PDA in turn did not respond well to the emergence of the iPhone and similar Androids. The PALM company has sunk into the clutches of HP. Nokia had similar market dominance but failed to develop the smart phone staying instead with the simple mobile device. Disurption of a business model can happen very swiftly. Extinction Timeline Summary
Libraries, Blackberries, Video rental stores, Post Offices, Getting Lost 2020 Copyright 2025 Desktop Computers, Spelling, Blogging Richard Watson in the Extinction Timeline speculates that by 2018 Libraries will be extinct; Copyright by 2020 and Desktop computers by Public Libraries in the UK are disappearing a at rate of knots. Over 2,000 staff disappeared out of 21, 000 ( 25% professional) Now even if we were to disagree with any of the speculations it does not harm our thinking at all to imagine what might be the case if any of these did come true by the speculated date, earlier or later. Later in this talk I will talk about Disruption which is where one technology invades the space of another more dominant technology and often destroys the more dominant technology. The classic recent case is where Kodak have filed for Bankruptcy protection. This huge company had been so dominant in the film and printing industries. Although they played around with digital technologies they failed to adapt their business models to this monster of a disruptive technology. Others did. Kodak did not. Film production has ceased and the company was lost. I will go on to argue that the Traditional Library Business Model has been totally disrupted as to be obsolete or dead. It has been totally disrupted by Digital. It will be extinct unless something is done to adapt or change. Steve O’Connor Information Exponentials Consultancy

In this Publishing cycle, he author transfers their IP or Intellectual Property Rights to the PUBLISHER in turn for being published. The Right is being transferred for the lifetime of the AUTHOR and 80 years, depending on the jurisdiction. Steve O’Connor Information Exponentials Consultancy

The LIBRARIAN in turn delivers funds to the PUBLISHER to pay for the resulting publications. The LIBRARY then makes the content available to the USER. Steve O’Connor Information Exponentials Consultancy
