HAPPY MONDAY! Did you get your syllabus signed?? Check out books Workbooks 1.1 Notes Say and Draw Homework
2
1.1 Points, Lines, and Planes Learning Targets – Students will be able to identify and model points, lines, and planes. Students will be able to identify intersecting lines and planes. Common Core State Standards – G. CO. 1 Know precise definitions of angle, circle, perpendicular line, parallel line, and line segment, based on the undefined notions of point, line, distance along a line, and distance around a circular arc.
3
Undefined Terms A point is a location. It has no shape or size. Named by a capital letter: Point A What are some real life examples of a point??
4
Undefined Terms… A line has no thickness or width and is made up of an infinite number of points There is exactly one line through any two points. Named by the points making up the line or a lowercase script letter: line m, line PQ, What are real life examples of a line??
5
Undefined Terms… A plane is a flat surface made up of an infinite number of points and lines. There is exactly one plane through any three non-collinear points. (three points not on the same line) Named by a capital script letter or three points not on the same line: plane K, plane BDC, plane CBD, plane DCB, etc…..
6
Defined Terms Collinear Points lie on the same line. Non-collinear points do not lie on the same line. Coplanar Points lie on the same plane. Non-coplanar points do not lie on the same plane. Draw a picture representing collinear and coplanar points.
7
Example 1 a)Use the figure to name a line containing point K
8
Example 1 cont… b) Use the figure to name a plane containing point L
9
Example 2 Name the geometric shape modeled by a 10x12 patio.
10
Example 3 Name the geometric shape modeled by a button on a table.
11
Brain Break! 1.Stand up. 2. Wink your left eye and snap with your right hand. 3. Wink your right eye and snap with your left hand. 4. Switch back and forth as fast as you can.
12
More Important Vocab Intersection/Intersect Two or more geometric figures intersect if they have one or more points in common. The intersection of the figures is the set of points the figures have in common. What does an intersection look like??
13
Example 4
14
Example 5
15
Definitions are explained using undefined terms and/or defined terms. Space is defined as a boundless, 3-D set of all points. Space can contain lines and planes.
16
Example 6 a) How many planes appear in this figure?
17
b) Name three points that are collinear.
18
c) Are points A, B, C, and D coplanar? Explain.
20
Activity Time! Line up at the front of the room from shortest to tallest. Wait for further instructions.

Each of you has a set of 5 cards with different constructions on it and a piece of paper with 5 rows. Choose someone to “Say” and someone to "Draw”. If you are the speaker, you have to describe what you see in front of you to the drawer, while they try to draw it in one of the blanks on their worksheet. When you both agree you are done, compare the original with what your partner drew. Then switch roles. Say and Draw
