Section 1-3: Segments, Rays, Parallel Lines and Planes Goal 2.02: Apply properties, definitions, and theorems of angles and lines to solve problems
2
Essential Question What are the characteristics of parallel lines and planes and skew lines?
3
between A point R is between S and T iff (if and only if) – a. R, S, and T are distinct and collinear – b. SR + RT = ST
4
segment segment AC, denoted AC or CA, consists of points A and C and all points between A and C
5
ray ray AC, denoted AC, consists of AC and all other points P such that C is between A and P. The endpoint of ray AC is A, the point named first. (The arrow must be on the right end of the segment bar.)
6
opposite rays AC and AB are opposite rays iff A is between B and C. (This means A, B, and C must be collinear.) *Note: Opposite rays must have the same endpoint.
7
parallel lines coplanar lines that do not intersect (Use as the symbol for the word parallel. Indicate lines are parallel by drawing a corresponding number of arrows on the parallel lines somewhere on the line other than the endpoint of the segment drawn.)
8
skew lines noncoplanar lines that do not intersect
9
parallel planes planes that do not intersect
10
Examples: page 19: 5 – 7 5.) Name all the labeled segments. 6.) Name all the labeled rays. 7.) a. Name a pair opposite rays with T as an endpoint. b. Name another pair of opposite rays. R S T W

Examples: p 19: 11, 14, 17 – 20 E B D F A C 11.) AC 14.) AC 17.) parallel planes 18.) parallel lines 19.) skew lines 20.) a line and a plane that are parallel
12
Classwork Independently do p. 20 (21 – 35) [10 minutes] Go Over Pairs do p. 20 (37 – 47) Finish compare answer with another pair
13
Ticket out the door 1.) How are parallel and skew lines alike? 2.) How are they different?
