3 The Comparative Degree When we compare two or more items, we use the comparative degree. Adjectives of 1/ 2 syllablesAdjectives of more than 2 syllables One syllable adjectives: Adjective+-er+than Clean......cleaner ( than ) Old.......... Older ( than ) Tidy..........Tidier ( than ) John is older than Sue. My car is cleaner than yours. *More than 2 syllable adjectives: More+adjective+than.* Comfortable My car is more comfortable than yours. * That book is more interesting than mine.

4 Special Cases When an adjective ends in – e, then we only add an –r. Example: large- larger When an adjective end in –”y”, “y” changes to “-i”. Example : tidy- tidier When an adjective ends in single vowel+consonant, we double tha last consonant. Example : big- bigger Irregular forms : Bad- worse- worst Good – better- best Far- farther- farthest

5 Special Adjectives There is a special group of 2 syllables adjectives that make the comparative and the superlative in a different way : Adjectives ending in –ful, -ing, -ous,… Helpful - more helpful, most helpful Boring – more boring, most boring Gorgeous – more gorgeous, most gorgeous

6 Superlative Degree Adjectives of 1/ 2 syllablesAdjectives of more than 2 syllables (the ) + Adjective +-est Clean- the cleanest Tidy- the tidiest Old- the oldest (the)+ most + adjective Comfortable- the most comfortable Expensive- the most expensive When we want to express that someone or something is superior to others then we use this form The special cases mentioned in the Comparative Degree work in the same way but using the Superlative form : Happy- happiest helpful- the most helpful near – the nearest Irregular Forms: Good- the best Bad – the worst Far – the farthest
