3  Figurative Language is whenever you use a word or phrase that does not have its normal, everyday, literal meaning  Imagery is the ability to form mental images of things or events  A simile is a comparison between two unlike things using “like” or “as”  A metaphor is a comparison between two unlike things without using “like” or “as”  Personification is when an author gives human qualities to an animal or an object  A hyperbole is an exaggeration  An idiom is a saying that has a different meaning than its literal translation

4 Together, we are going to annotate the following poem to determine the following:  Whom is the speaker?  What is the structure of the poem?  How many lines are in the poem?  How may stanzas are in the poem?  Do we see any figurative language?

5 With your partner, you will summarize each stanza of the poem What Is Brown? by Mary O’Neill.  How many lines does the poem have?  How many stanzas does the poem have?  What does the poem reveal about the speaker?  Do you see any figurative language?

6 You are going to create your own color poem using the form of the “Brown” poem. Choose a color and use the table below:  List 10 adjectives that are related to your color.  List 10 nouns related to your color.  List 10 feelings, verbs, and/or ideas that might be related to your color. Using the information you have recorded, create your own “color” poem. Write your poem on the back of this page.  Use at least 5 adjectives.  Use at least 10 nouns.  Use at least one simile and one metaphor

7  Read the poem The Taxi by Amy Lowell.  Answer the six questions that follow.  Turn your exit ticket in upon completion.

8  Give me an example of the following types of figurative language:  Simile  Metaphor  Personification  Imagery  Hyperbole  Idiom
