Phonics/Spelling Rule 1 When you have a vowel and a consonant with a silent e at the end, the vowel will have a long sound. A long vowel sound says the name of the vowel: “a” as in ale; “e” as in eve; “i” as in ice; “o” as in old; and “u” as in cube.
