2. Instructions  1. You will be placed in a group of four based on the NUMBER of your playing card  2. Each SUIT corresponds to a question.  3. When I call your SUIT, YOU are in charge of leading a discussion about your question with your group. Remember, discuss and hear several viewpoints! Encourage each person to speak at least once during the discussion, and take notes on your conversation.  4. You will also report on your discussion to the class after your question.  5. I will then call another SUIT and you will move on to a new question.

3. Questions HEARTS  In chapters 11 and 12, Jane settles into her new life at Thornfield. Compare and contrast this new environment to both Gateshead and Lowood. Discuss both the physical setting as well as the people in each location. Is Thornfield better or worse for Jane than her previous homes?

4. Questions CLUBS  In chapters 11 and 12, the reader is introduced to Mr. Rochester, first from Mrs. Fairfax’s description of him, and then in person. What are your first impressions of Mr. Rochester? Do you think he will be a positive or a negative person in Jane’s life? Why?

5. Questions DIAMONDS  A SYMBOL in a text is a word or object that stands for, or represents, another object or idea. In Jane Eyre, names are symbolic. Discuss what you think each person and place name might symbolize in the text. Think of the following: Jane Eyre, Gateshead, Lowood, Thornfield, Miss Temple, Mrs. Fairfax, the Reeds, and others that you can think of.

6. Questions SPADES  The first part of Jane Eyre, chapters 1-10, describe Jane’s experiences as a young girl. Beginning in chapter 11, Jane is now an adult. How has Jane changed over time? How has she remained the same? What do you think are the core, unchanging characteristics of our heroine, and what do you think of her?
