Welcome to EYFS and KS1 Mathematics Evening Wednesday 26 th November 2014

Aims of this evening To provide a context for how maths is taught at Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1. To develop understanding of age related expectations. To provide useful activities, games and tips for supporting your child at home.

Starter activity… Karate numbers

Maths in Foundation Stage Focus here is on learning through child initiated play, adult led activities and independent challenges. Children encouraged to learn the language of maths – comparing sizes, grouping objects, counting objects. At home you can focus on practical, child led activities – look for opportunities to develop the language of maths.

Early Learning Goal (End of year expectation in EYFS) Children count reliably with numbers from one to 20, place them in order and say which number is one more or one less than a given number. Using quantities and objects, they add and subtract two single-digit numbers and count on or back to find the answer. They solve problems, including doubling, halving and sharing.

Learning written methods is not the ultimate aim… Maths teaching today aims to develop children’s mental strategies and then written methods that derive from and support mental methods. The new National Curriculum raises expectations, focusing on logical thinking, problem solving and rapid recall of facts (see handout) eg Number bonds within 20 Times tables (2’s, 5’s and 10’s) Doubles and halves

Maths in Key Stage 1 In Years 1 & 2 we continue to move mathematical skills from the concrete to the abstract, including real life problem solving. Use of resources such as counters and objects are replaced with number lines and 100 squares. Informal written recording is developed to enable children to recognise and understand mathematical concepts.

Alphabet game! We all know the alphabet really well, so which letter comes after P? Which letter comes before M? Which letter comes 4 steps before T? Which letter comes 10 steps before O? abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz It is much easier when we can see it – this is the same for children with numbers!

Moving on to models… As children grasp the concepts of quantity, they will begin to use number lines and number squares to record their thinking. These are useful in a range of situations and at a range of levels to reinforce mental strategies – we all use number lines in our heads without thinking about it!

Informal Recording How would we solve this calculation using a blank number line? 62 + 35 = The inverse of this strategy would be used for subtraction.

Using a number square

Partitioning A developing understanding of place value enables children to partition numbers and calculate in a different way. They will begin to partition numbers in to tens and units before they begin to calculate. Eg 62 + 35 = 13 103 62 + 35 90 = 97 7

Multiplication at Key Stage 1 Children should have an understanding of quantity and the number system before tackling this concept. Firstly, taught as repeated addition. Lots of: If I have 6 lots of 3 bears, how many bears do I have? 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 18

Arrays 2 lots of 3 3 lots of 2

Division at Key Stage 1 Using practice resources to begin with – share 20 cubes between 4 children. The practical activity is shown as a number sentence: 20 divided 4 = 5

Ideas for games you can play at home Counting anything! Spotting numbers! On your way to school In the car on a long journey At the shop – can you get me 6 carrots? Can you put 4 bananas into the basket? Packets of sweets – how many red ones? How many blue? Which colour do you have most of? Counting in patterns of 2’s, 5’s and 10’s (socks, fingers, crayons etc) forwards and backwards. Dominoes – excellent for recognising quantities and comparing. Snakes and Ladders/Counting board games.

Top tips! Main aim is to develop a love of learning and a feeling of success. Maths is everywhere – take the opportunity to talk about it! Avoid the negative! “I was no good at maths when I was at school…!”

Thank you for listening Any questions?
